Israel on Sunday released a video showing an alleged Hezbollah tunnel under a cemetery, laden with a significant array of weapons, including rifles, grenade launchers, and rocket systems.
The video shows an individual navigating the tunnel, which stretches beneath a cemetery. Along the walls are stockpiles of weaponry, including rifles, grenade launchers, missiles, ammunition cartridges, and other military-grade equipment.
"Multiple underground terrorist tunnels have been dismantled by our troops, including a tunnel that was strategically located under a cemetery. Hezbollah doesn’t value human life—dead or alive," a statement by the IDF said.
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, has led to significant casualties. On Sunday, Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon resulted in at least 23 civilian deaths, including seven children, in the village of Aalmat, located north of Beirut. Hezbollah had been increasing its rocket fire into Israel following the onset of hostilities in Gaza, asserting solidarity with Hamas. In response, Israel has conducted air and ground operations aimed at Hezbollah sites.
In Gaza, similar airstrikes have killed displaced civilians in Jabaliya, with reports from Al-Ahly Hospital indicating that at least 17 people, including nine women, died during the bombing. A separate strike claimed the lives of a Hamas government official and his family in Gaza City. Israeli authorities defend these operations as targeting militant strongholds, though many strikes have caused extensive civilian fatalities.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also engaged in multiple discussions with US president-elect Donald Trump to reaffirm their joint position on countering Iran’s influence in the region. Israeli President Isaac Herzog is expected to meet with current US President Joe Biden on Tuesday, as international pressure mounts for a resolution to the crisis.
In Lebanon, the death toll from Israeli strikes has surpassed 3,100, with numerous attacks reaching regions beyond Hezbollah’s typical strongholds in the south. The Lebanese Health Ministry reports that the latest strike in Aalmat killed displaced families and local residents. Hezbollah MP Raed Berro publicly refuted Israel’s claims that the targeted building housed Hezbollah members or weaponry, emphasising the civilian nature of the casualties.
Further north, in Syria, an Israeli airstrike hit a residential area in Sayyida Zeinab near Damascus, killing seven civilians, according to Syrian authorities. Israel has yet to comment on the incident.
