Sean'Diddy' Combs: Why Jennifer Lopez is under-fire for her past relationship

Send Push
Sean 'Diddy' Combs and Jennifer Lopez were among the most prominent Hollywood couples in the late 90s, capturing the spotlight with their high-profile romance and controversies. They dated from 1999 to 2001, making headlines with their glamorous appearances, emotional ups and downs, and ultimately, legal issues.

Years after their breakup, the couple has resurfaced in the news. Jennifer has remained silent regarding Sean 'Diddy', who is currently behind bars facing serious federal charges, including sex trafficking and involvement in prostitution. In September, the music mogul was indicted on three criminal counts, accused of sexually abusing women and coercing them into drug-fuelled sex parties through threats and violence. Sean Combs is set to stand trial for racketeering and sex trafficking on 5 May 2025.

Reports indicate Combs has twice been denied bail, with prosecutors voicing concerns about potential witness tampering. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges. Amid Diddy's escalating legal issues, interest in his past relationship with Lopez has reignited.

During their relationship, Sean Diddy and Jennifer Lopez were both at the peak of their music and acting careers. Their red carpet appearances regularly made headlines, though they never took the plunge into marriage. Speculation has swirled for years as to why they never wed, with some theories pointing to Diddy's relationship with his ex, Kim Porter.

While he was dating Lopez, it’s suggested Diddy maintained a lingering affection for Porter, the mother of his three children—Christian, and twin daughters Jessie and D'Lila. Porter passed away in 2018. Diddy himself admitted in an earlier interview, “I got caught up in the hype, [but] I was still in love with Kim.” Porter once remarked that Diddy and Lopez’s relationship "wasn't real," attributing Diddy’s attraction to Lopez’s star status.

Another notable reason is Diddy’s well-known fear of commitment. In a 2018 interview with Andy Cohen, he confessed he could never see himself getting married.

Sean Diddy and Jennifer Lopez's Breakup

Reflecting on her relationship with Diddy, Jennifer Lopez mentioned in a 2003 interview with Vibe magazine that infidelity was the main reason for their breakup. “I never caught him, but I just knew,” she said, recounting how Diddy would claim he was going out to a club for a couple of hours, only to disappear for the entire night. “It was the first time I was with someone who wasn’t faithful. I was in this relationship with Puff where I was totally crying, crazy, and going nuts—it really turned my whole life into a tailspin,” said the Unstoppable star.

JLo’s Response to Questions on Diddy

Recently, Lopez was asked about Diddy’s allegations while interacting with fans after a screening of her film Unstoppable during the AFI Fest in Los Angeles. She was signing autographs when a woman asked if she had any comments about Diddy and the allegations against him. Lopez, who was nearing the end of the line, moved towards the elevator with her security detail and promptly ended the signing session, distancing herself from the crowd as she walked away.

JLo’s Past Romance with Sean 'Diddy' Combs: Back in the News

Jennifer Lopez’s past romance with Sean 'Diddy' Combs has drawn renewed attention after Elon Musk recently questioned her silence on the allegations made against him. During a podcast with Joe Rogan, Musk criticised the singer’s recent speech at Kamala Harris' rally, saying, “She’s warning people against Trump. How many did she warn against Diddy? Zero. Maybe we shouldn’t trust her.”

While together, JLo and Diddy were known for their glamour and scandals. In one high-profile incident in 1999, they were both arrested after a shooting broke out at a Manhattan nightclub where they were partying. Following a chase, police found a gun in their vehicle, leading to both being detained. While Lopez was cleared after spending 14 hours in custody, Diddy faced charges of criminal possession of an unregistered firearm and attempted bribery. However, he was eventually acquitted of all charges after a lengthy legal process.
