Unlike President Donald Trump who ditched black and wore a blue suit to Pope Francis' funeral, First Lady Melania Trump's funeral outfit became a talking point on social media as she wore an all-black outfit accentuated by a dramatic veil -- the traditional dress for a Catholic funeral.
A comment from Iranian academic Foad Izadi went viral as he shared a photo of Melania in her mourning outfit and said hijab across the world stands for modesty, chastity and simplicity.
"In a world obsessed with appearances, hijab quietly proclaims purity, dignity, and humility. Today, at the Pope’s funeral, Melania Trump stood—a silent witness to these timeless values," one wrote sharing Izadi's post.
Melania wore a black veil when she met Pope Francis in 2017 following the traditional dress code that includes long sleeves, formal black clothing and a veil to cover the head.
The funeral coincided with Melania's 55th birthday which Donald Trump said they would celebrate on Air Force One on their way back from the funeral. "She’s got a working birthday," Trump told reporters on the presidential jet as the couple headed off for the first foreign trip since his return to power.
"I'm taking her for dinner on the Boeing -- I'm taking her for dinner on Air Force One," he said.
The Trumps have led largely separate lives since he took office, with Melania spending most of her time in New York, where their son Barron, 19, is attending university. But they have made a few joint appearances, including on Monday when they hosted the traditional Easter egg roll at the White House. Last year the couple spent her birthday apart, with Melania in Florida while Trump was in New York for a trial over payments of hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels. Trump said at the time that “it’d be nice to be with her, but I’m at a courthouse for a rigged trial.”
Is Melania Trump a Catholic?
Yes, Melania Trump is a Catholic and in 2017 she was reported as the first Catholic First Lady in the White House since Jacqueline Kennedy. According to reports, Melania is religious in private and was honored to be attending the papal funeral. "She respected the pope," a social source tells PEOPLE. "It is a sad time for Catholics around the world, and the first lady is honored to go to the funeral."
