NEW DELHI: United States President Donald Trump on Sunday said he would see if, "after a 'thousand years,' a solution can be arrived at concerning Kashmir".
Trump's remark comes a day after India agreed to Pakistan's call for a ceasefire amid military action that Indian armed forces took in the wake of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam in which 26 civilians were killed.
The US President also said he was proud that the "USA was able to help you arrive at this historic and heroic decision" as the aggression "could have led to the death and destruction of so many, and so much".
"I am very proud of the strong and unwaveringly powerful leadership of India and Pakistan for having the strength, wisdom, and fortitude to fully know and understand that it was time to stop the current aggression that could have lead to the death and destruction of so many, and so much. Millions of good and innocent people could have died!" Trump wrote on his social media site, Truth Social.
Trump said that he would increase trade with New Delhi and Islamabad substantially, calling both nations "great".
"Your legacy is greatly enhanced by your brave actions. I am proud that the USA was able to help you arrive at this historic and heroic decision. While not even discussed, I am going to increase trade, substantially, with both of these great Nations. Additionally, I will work with you both to see if, after a “thousand years,” a solution can be arrived at concerning Kashmir. God Bless the leadership of India and Pakistan on a job well done!!!" he wrote.
India and Pakistan announced an immediate ceasefire on Saturday after a sharp surge in cross-border tensions sparked by the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that claimed 26 civilian lives. The tension began when terrorists backed by Pakistan killed civilians in Pahalgam. In response, India launched ‘ Operation Sindoor ’ on May 7, conducting precision strikes on nine terror camps located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK).
Pakistan retaliated with drone incursions targeting regions in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. While Indian air defence systems successfully intercepted the attacks, the escalation heightened fears of a broader confrontation between the nuclear-armed neighbours .
