NEW DELHI: The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority ( NPPA ) has extended the ceiling price fixation for orthopaedic knee implants for one more year till Sept 15, 2025. As per the notification issued on Sept 10, while the cost of the primary knee replacement system (titanium alloy coated) has been capped at Rs 51,563, the cost of revision knee replacement system has been capped at Rs 83,547.
The NPPA had in 2017 notified the ceiling price of orthopaedic knee implants by invoking extra-ordinary powers, in public interest, under Paragraph 19 of Drugs Prices Control Order (DPCO) 2013, for a period of one year.
The pharmaceutical pricing authority has maintained the applicability of ceiling prices for orthopaedic knee implants since then. Officials said this has been made to ensure the implants are affordable and to stop fleecing of patients.
The NPPA, in its order on Aug 16, 2020, stated it had "noticed that orthopaedic-knee implants are having unjustified, unreasonable and irrational high trade margins leading to their exorbitant prices which affects the out of pocket expenses of patients and lakhs of patients are not able to pay for arthroplasty procedures because of these exorbitant prices and suffering in pain."
