Four men spend 2 years in jail for 'killing' man found alive in Lahore prison

Four men spent two years in prison after being accused of murder, only to discover that the person they allegedly killed is alive and incarcerated in Pakistan.

The body, misidentified as that of Tejveer Singh by clothing, was found in Ghaziabad in Aug 2022, leading to the wrongful imprisonment of the men, including Gaurav Tyagi (30), who is now out on bail but continues his fight to clear his name. Along with Gaurav, Satish Tyagi, Satender Tyagi, and Bittu were jailed for the murder. Of the four, only Satish remains in custody, while the others have been granted bail. Gaurav said Tejveer worked at his dairy for a week, about two months before the incident, but disappeared after allegedly stealing Gaurav's wallet. Tejveer's father, Tejpal, had claimed that the four men had killed his son.

The truth about Singh emerged months after the murder when intelligence officials informed the family that he was alive in Lahore Central Jail. Gaurav's lawyer pointed to the flaws in the probe, saying: "Cops filed a chargesheet within two months of the body being found, despite no DNA report . Autopsy indicated death by asphyxiation, yet cops claimed to have recovered a spade as murder weapon." The lawyer said it took 18 months of repeated RTI applications from Gaurav's family to obtain the DNA report. "When the report finally arrived, it went to the IO, who kept it under wraps. Only after a court order did the police finally present it to the magistrate, proving the body wasn't Tejveer's."
