CHENNAI: Former Australia batter Michael Bevan said that he is not a huge fan of Steve Smith operating at the top of the order. Smith, a maverick batting success with over 100 Tests in his kitty, has recently occupied the spot vacated by veteran David Warner and partnered Usman Khawaja at the top for Australia.
"Smith was successful in the position he was playing at. There was no reason to change that. It was always a little bit of a gamble. Maybe it had something to do with Cameron Green getting into the team. He will be a very good player in the future," said Bevan.
"The Australian team and selectors must find the next best opener who plays in that position. That makes sense to me. I feel that there are enough openers to fill that position."
Bevan also feels Australia will have the advantage in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar trophy against India given the "advantage" of playing on home soil and the emergence of a "new era" under Pat Cummins .
Bevan, who will coach Southern Superstars in the second season of the Legends League Cricket , said that India's red-ball dominance in Australia could come to an end.
"Even though India won the last time in Australia (last two times) and are playing well, there is still the home-ground advantage. Australians are playing pretty good cricket in the longest format. They are improving. For me, the home-ground advantage is going to tip it in favour of Australia," said Bevan. "It is going to be a competitive series. India have been successful in Australia in the past."
