PEHOWA : Congress party won Pehowa, Thanesar and Shahabad assembly constituencies in Kurukshetra , while Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP ) snatched Ladwa with its chief ministerial (CM) face, after the results of 2024 state assembly elections on Tuesday.
BJP’s CM face Nayab Singh Saini , its candidate from Ladwa defeated sitting Congress sitting MLA Mewa Singh with a margin of 16,054 votes. Saini got 70,177 (47.4%) votes while Mewa Singh got 54,123 (36.55%) votes. An independent candidate Vikramjeet Singh Cheema has bagged 11,191 votes, while INLD’s Sapna Barshami got 7,439, while a BJP dissident Sandeep Garg too has got 2,262 votes and these three candidates are considered to have weaken the prospect of Congress candidate winning in Ladwa and benefitted the BJP.
Mewa Singh was giving a tough fight to BJP's Haryana CM face Nayab Singh Saini, but the latter defeated him. Nayab Singh Saini, whose native village is Mirjapur in Ambala district, was first elected as MLA from Naraingarh assembly in 2014-2019, where he had defeated Congress candidate Ram Kishan by 24,361 votes. Saini later was elected as Kurukshetra MP in the 2019 Parliamentary election when he had defeated Congress candidate Nirmal Singh with a big margin of 3,84,591 votes. Saini was later made Haryana CM by BJP in place of Manohar Lal Khattar in 2024. Saini was then fielded by BJP to contest a by-election from Karnal, where in June 2024, he defeated Congress’s Tarlochan Singh by 41,540 votes.
Now, BJP fielded him from Ladwa and he won this seat also and is likely to become next CM of Haryana if saffron party forms government, as his names were announced as CM face by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah during the state assembly election campaign rallies.
At Ladwa in 2019, Mewa Singh as Congress candidate had defeated BJP’s then sitting MLA Pawan Saini with a margin of 12,637 votes. In 2014, BJP’s Pawan Saini won from Ladwa and in 2009, Ladwa seat was won by INLD’s Sher Singh Barshami.
Talking to the media in Kurukshetra, accompanied by Subhash Sudha, Nayab Singh Saini said, “BJP is ready to serve Haryana for the third time. We are making a one-sided government in Haryana for the third consecutive time on the basis of the work that we have done in the last 10 years. At Centre, Narendra Modi Ji has become Prime Minister for the third time and we have developed Haryana at speed under his leadership. We have honestly resolved the problems of the people and in future also, we will continue to take forward Haryana strongly and honestly.”
In Kurukshetra city, Congress candidate Ashok Arora won from Thanesar assembly as he defeated BJP’s Subhash Sudha with a small margin of 3,243 votes. Arora got 70,076 (48.93%) votes while Sudha got 66,833 (46.67%) votes.
Ashok Arora was earlier elected as MLA from Thanesar in 2009 as Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) candidate. In 2014, Arora as Congress candidate lost Thanesar seat to Subhash Sudha of BJP. In 2019 again, there was a very close contest between Sudha and Arora (Congress), when Sudha as BJP candidate from Thanesar won by a margin of just 842 votes.
After a gap of 15 years, Congress has won Pehowa constituency, as its candidate Mandeep Chatha defeated BJP’s Jai Bhagwan Sharma in a close contest on Tuesday.
Mandeep Chatha defeated Jai Bhagwan with a margin of 6,553 votes as he got 64,548 (50.19%) votes while the latter got 57,995 (45.10%) votes. INLD candidate Baldev Singh Waraich remained at third position with only 1772 votes followed by Jannayak Janata Party’s (JJP) Sukhwinder Kaur 1253 votes, Gurnam Singh Charuni of Sanyukt Sangharsh Party with only 1170 votes and Aam Aadmi Party ’s Gehal Singh Sandhu with 890 votes.
Before this, Congress had won Pehowa seat in 2009 as its candidate Harmohinder Singh was elected MLA from here. In 2014, INLD’s Jaswinder Singh Sandhu was elected MLA from Pehowa. In 2019, BJP’s Sandeep Singh was elected Pehowa MLA as he had then defeated now elected Mandeep Chatha with a margin of 5,314 votes.
In Shahabad, Congress candidate, a turncoat from JJP, Ram Karan Kala defeated BJP’s Subhash Chand with a margin of 6,441 votes. Kala got 61,050 (50.37%) votes while Subhash Chand got 54,609 (45.05%) votes. Congress had earlier won Shahabad in 2009 when its candidate Anil Dhantori was elected MLA from here, as he defeated INLD’s Jitender Kumar. In 2014, BJP’s Krishan Kumar Bedi defeated Ram Karan who contested as INLD candidate with a margin of just 562 votes. In 2019, Ram Karan as JJP candidate won from Shahabad after defeating BJP’s Krishan Bedi by a margin of 37,127 votes.
