Taurid Meteor Shower: When and where to catch the spectacular celestial display in the US

Send Push
Skywatchers are up for a cosmic treat as November promises, not one, but two major meteor showers. The night sky will light up with dazzling streaks of these cosmic wonders. The first one to enchant the celestial observers would be the Taurid meteor shower , with its fiery fragments from the ancient Comet Encke, which is sure to mesmerize one and all with its brilliance. If you're eager to see shooting stars dance across the sky, mark your calendars and find a perfect, dark spot to take in this celestial show. The last meteor shower was the Orionids, which are traces of Halley's Comet.

Here's everything you need to know to catch nature's spectacular light display.

What makes the Taurids special is their origin story. This annual meteor display is fueled by debris from the periodic Comet Encke, which last passed through the inner solar system in October 2023 and is expected to make a dazzling return in February 2027.

Taurids can be best observed between November 5 and November 12. During this time, you can get to see roughly 8 to 12 meteors per hour in ideal conditions. While the brilliant yellow would be the dominant colour, many of these shooting stars burst in vibrant shades of orange, green, red, and blue, creating a stunning multicolored display. The best time to catch them is past midnight because their radiants would be the highest at that time.

Where to see them in the US?

Taurids will be visible in the United States across the country. All you have to do is to find a clear place under an unlit sky. This would need a bit patience as your eyes would need some time to adjust to the darkness.

When to watch the northern Taurids?

While the southern ones has reached their peak on November 5, the northern taurids can be seen in the United States on November 12, as per Space.com.

The southern Taurid shower usually peaks in early November, and the northern part of it in mid-November. They also overlap, and each of them runs for many weeks.
