A series of explosions of pagers used by the militant group Hezbollah exploded in Lebanon and Syria resulting in the death of 11 people and injuries to hundreds. Videos of the explosion, which started at 3:30 p.m. local time in southern Beirut, and continued for over an hour. Videos and photos of the explosion were shared on social media, which shows the sudden explosion Tuesday and the immediate reaction of people around. Among the key targets were the southern Beirut suburb of Daniyeh, and the eastern Bekka valley. Both these locations are considered Hezbollah strongholds. Reuters reported citing witnesses that the explosions were heard at least till 4:30 p.m. local time, in the afternoon. Despite the lack of any official explanation for the explosions, photos and videos shared by eyewitnesses have enabled the media to shed light on the possible causes. Reuters reported that some of the detonations took place after the pagers rang, causing the fighters to put their hands on them or bring them up to their faces to check the screens. However, the review of footage by Reuters indicated that the blast was relatively contained and did not appear to cause major damage or start any fires. The blasts appeared to only wound the person wearing the pager or closest to it, based on Reuters' analysis of two separate clips from the CCTV footage of supermarkets.

Footage shot at hospitals and shared on social media appeared to show individuals with injuries of varying degrees, including to the face, missing fingers and gaping wounds at the hip where the pager was likely worn.

Lebanon called the explosions an "Israeli cyberattack," but did not provide further details. Israel's military has not yet commented on the blasts. The US State Department said Washington was gathering information and was not involved. (With inputs from Reuters)
