Mumbai: The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) in Mumbai will temporarily close its runways for annual post-monsoon maintenance on October 17, 2024. Both cross runways, RWY 09/27 and RWY 14/32, will be non-operational from 11 am to 5 pm as part of the planned maintenance. This closure is part of the airport's routine safety measures. The post-monsoon maintenance allows for repairs and inspections to address any wear and tear caused by the heavy rains during the monsoon season, according to The Indian Express report. “Mumbai airport is one of the world’s busiest single–runway airports, and we have planned the closure to uphold safety and efficiency standards,” said an official from the airport. To prepare for the closure, the airport issued a notice to airmen (NOTAM) six months in advance, informing airlines and other stakeholders of the upcoming work. This advance notice allowed airlines to adjust their schedules to minimise disruption for passengers.Airport authorities have coordinated with airlines and stakeholders to ensure flight schedules run smoothly around the six-hour closure. While the runways will be closed, officials are confident that careful planning will keep the impact on flight operations minimal. Passengers travelling on October 17 are advised to check with their airlines for updated schedules to avoid any inconvenience.
