Chennai: A fresh low-pressure area is expected to form over the southwest Bay of Bengal within the next 48 hours, bringing heavy rainfall to the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu from November 9, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai. This system could intensify, leading to intense rain in the state’s capital and other regions in the coming days.

Rain Alert for Coastal Tamil NaduOfficials have forecasted intense spells of rain for Chennai on November 12 and 13, with a yellow alert issued for 11 districts, including Chennai, Chengalpattu, and Kancheepuram, as per a Dtnext report. Other districts under the yellow warning are Ranipet, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, and Pudukkottai. Heavy rainfall is expected in these areas due to the approaching weather system, which is currently associated with a cyclonic circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal.The low-pressure system is anticipated to move westwards, targeting the Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka coasts over the next couple of days. Starting November 9, coastal regions of Tamil Nadu are likely to experience heavy rain, with isolated places in Chengalpattu, Villupuram, and surrounding areas seeing significant downpours over the next three days. In addition to heavy rain, thunderstorms are also likely in coastal and adjoining interior districts. Rainfall Forecast Till Mid-NovemberAccording to extended range predictions using dynamic models, near-normal to slightly above-normal rainfall is expected over the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu till mid-November. However, the rest of the state may receive below-average rainfall during this period.Residents in Chennai and the surrounding districts are advised to prepare for heavy rain and possible disruptions in the coming days, particularly on November 12 and 13, as the impact of the low-pressure area peaks. Fishermen Advised to Stay AshoreThe RMC has cautioned fishermen against venturing into the sea due to rough weather conditions. Wind speeds are expected to reach 35 to 45 km per hour, with gusts up to 55 km per hour, particularly along the northern and southern coasts of Tamil Nadu, the Gulf of Mannar, and the Comorin area. As a precaution, fishermen from Tamil Nadu have been urged to avoid fishing activities until further notice, given the squally weather forecast.
