Srinagar: Syed Mushtaq Ahmad Bukhari, Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) candidate from the Surankote Assembly constituency, passed away due to cardiac arrest. Bukhari, a 75-year-old politician, had joined the BJP in 2022 after parting ways with the National Conference. Bukhari has been with the National Conference for nearly four decades but left the party over a disagreement with Farooq Abdullah over Scheduled Tribe status to Pahari-speaking people.During the campaign for Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh had compared Bukhari to Mahatma Gandhi and former South African President Nelson Mandela. Chugh had hailed him as a transformative leader and praised his efforts in bringing ‘freedom’ to the Pahari community in Jammu and Kashmir.(More details to be added)
