One night, after washing the dishes, I realised that the water in my sink was taking ages to go down the plug hole - and I realised I needed to unblock my drain. The water was still running easily, just taking much longer than it should, so I knew there was no need to waste money on a plumber. Instead, I wanted to try dealing with the small clog myself first.
I looked online and the most popular suggestion was to pour white vinegar and baking soda down the plughole, and since I had some at the back of my kitchen cupboard, I decided to give it a go. The next morning, I followed the instructions online and poured the white vinegar and baking soda down my sink, but the following evening, the water was still taking a long time to swirl down the drain.

I really did not want to spend money on a plunger or a chemical drain cleaner, so I decided to try one more natural cleaning remedy: washing soda.
Washing soda is an alkaline product which is known to break down grease, oil and leftover food particles, which are the most common types of drain blockages.
These common clogs are acidic, which is why washing soda works so well to dissolve and loosen these blockages in just a few minutes.
White vinegar and baking soda can work to unclog a small blockage due to the fizzy reaction it creates, but after doing a little research, I discovered it is unlikely to work against a grease clog, which is often found in a kitchen sink.
So I decided to try it out and I was really impressed at how quickly it was to unblock my drain as it only took 15 minutes to do.
All I did was first fill up my kettle, let it boil, and pour the hot water down the plughole. This is done to help loosen the greasy clog so the washing soda is more effective.
Next, I poured a little of the washing soda down the sink, then I left it alone for 15 minutes to give the solution time to break down the blockage.
Once the time was up, I filled and reboiled the kettle and then poured more water down the sink. This is done to flush out the remaining debris to get rid of the clog completely.
After running my tap, I discovered it had gotten rid of the blockage completely as my tap water was running smoothly down the drain.
This was a really easy way to unclog my drain, and I now keep a package of washing soda in my sink cupboard in case I have to deal with pesky blockages in the future.
