Roger Federer's agent is hoping that the 20-time Grand Slam champion can make a proper return to the Laver Cup with Rafael Nadal by his side.

Federer and Tony Godsick co-created the team tournament seven years ago. In 2022, the Swiss star retired at the Laver Cup after joining forces with Nadal for an emotional doubles match.

And Godsick wants to see the rivals reunite in a new role.

John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg are stepping down as the captains of Team World and Team Europe after a successful seven years. Both men were originally drafted in on two-year contracts but continued to head up the rival squads.

Andre Agassi will be the new leader of Team World as of 2024. Fans had been hoping to see Federer take over as Team Europe's captain, having played for them four times.

But Yannick Noah will replace Borg and head up the Europe squad next year. However, Federer's agent believes the tennis world could still see Federer take on the role and appoint a special vice-captain.

"My dream is for Roger to be captain and Rafa to be assistant, and then the other way around," Godsick told Marca. "This way, they would be in charge for longer.

"The rivalry they had on the court was very special, but I think their friendship off the court is even more special. They are a clear example that all competitors can get along."

Federer and Nadal teamed up to play doubles twice at the Laver Cup - once for the Swiss star's retirement and once in the tournament's inaugural year in 2017.

And the idea of seeing the two iconic competitors join forces was one of the motivations behind Federer and Godsick creating the tournament.

The TEAM8 agent explained: "We wanted rivals, in this case Federer and Rafa Nadal, to be teammates for a weekend. We could not imagine that in such a short period of time we would have so much success."

For now, Federer is happy sitting front row and taking in the atmosphere from the stands. But Team Europe member Stefanos Tsitsipas admitted the 43-year-old was still pulling for them.
