Drivers faced delays of up to three hours on the M5 northbound this afternoon after a multi-vehicle crash brought traffic to a standstill near Bristol. The incident happened between J22 Burnham-on-Sea and J21 Weston-super-Mare, causing severe congestion stretching back more than 13 miles towards Bridgwater.
All lanes reopened by the evening, but traffic still crawled due to the earlier disruption and recovery delays. The crash, which occurred around 15 miles from Bristol Airport, led to two lanes being closed while emergency services and recovery crews worked at the scene. Motorists were urged to allow extra time and avoid the area if possible, with nearby routes including the A38 through Highbridge also heavily congested.
