Liverpool have been dealt another injury setback after Jeremie Frimpong was forced to leave the pitch due to a hamstring problem during the Reds' Champions League face-off with Eintracht Frankfurt. The Dutch international had to be substituted just 19 minutes into the game at Deutsche Bank Park.
The 24-year-old encountered the muscle problem following a sprint down the right flank in the 16th minute. Despite his initial attempts to continue playing, Frimpong was visibly limping on the pitch before eventually sitting down on the grass a few minutes later and going off. Conor Bradley replaced the summer signing.
Frimpong was making only his third Premier League or Champions League start of the season having had a spell out with a hamstring injury picked up in the Merseyside outfit's opening league game against Bournemouth.
The Reds were already without Ryan Gravenberch in Germany on Wednesday night due to an ankle problem. However, Frimpong's international team-mate could be fit for Saturday's trip to face Brentford away from home in the Premier League. Frimpong looks as though he faces a few weeks on the sidelines, by contrast.
Arne Slot named a bold starting line-up in Frankfurt without talismanic attacker Mohamed Salah while summer signing Milos Kerkez dropped to the bench. The Dutch coach explained pre-match: "The first answer is always yes, (it was a difficult decision to make).
"But that is also to do with Mo and all the players I have. Every time I select a team, it's always difficult because I have so many good players. That's also the reason why I use these players.
"I liked the way we ended the game against United. Mainly the second half. Created a lot of chances. And Ryan is out, so that means we have to restructure our midfield a little bit as well - defensively and offensively.
"So all together with the way Frankfurt usually plays, we decided to start like this. But as always, I have players who start the game and I have players who can impact the game off the bench and that is (the case) today as well."
Liverpool led 3-1 into half-time. After once again going a goal down to Rasmus Kristensen's low drive, three goals in nine minutes from Hugo Ekitike - against his former club - then Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate gave the visitors a welcome lead going into the break.
