HSBC to roll out biggest banking app overhaul in 13 years - some are already trying it

is preparing for the relaunch of its banking app, which is set to be the most dramatic overhaul since 2012. The bank confirmed it was set to introduce management tools to its app, which would allow savers to silo their savings for the first time.

The apps will allow savers to see their spending habits with purchases and spending categorised as well as automatic transfers will be available in the future.

It will also launch an open banking feature, which will allow customers to see all their accounts, including potential loans, savings credit cards and pensions in one place.

The majority of the Beta version users have used the app to pay another person. HSBC has noticed that the second most popular use has been transferring money to themselves. The third most popular use is linked to the app's balance forecast, which calculates how much customers have left after all regular bills are paid.

HSBC revealed that in a YouGov survey it had commissioned, banking apps were the fourth most popular app accessed on Brit's smartphones.

Of the 2,000 customers it spoke to, four in 10 said they check the app at least once a day, with an additional 45% checking their account at least once a week.

In total, over eight in 10 people (83%) check their banking or finance app on a weekly basis.

In May, HSBC will shut down Zing, its travel money and international payments app launched early last year.

Introduced in January 2024, Zing was HSBC's foray into the competitive fintech arena, aiming to take on established players like Revolut and Monzo. The app was accessible to non-HSBC customers as well.
