Claire's closures MAPPED: Major high street chain closes 145 stores - check your area

Claire's is set to close 145 stores across the UK and Ireland after a rescue deal saved half of the business. Investment firm Modella Capital saved the popular accessories chain last week, purchasing the majority of its operations and assets from administrators.

Last Monday administrators agreed to sell 156 stores to the investment group, however, 145 stores were not included in the deal and jobs could be at risk. Administrator Interpath said it will keep the 145 Claire's stores open as long as possible while it explores other options, but it has been reported that clearance sales have already started at some of the outlets.

Claire's called in administrators for its UK and Ireland operations last month after filing for bankruptcy in the United States.

Modella has become a significant player in the UK retail sector since it was set up in 2022, having also acquired WHSmith's high street division earlier this year. Last year, it took over the arts and crafts chain Hobbycraft and it also invested in Ted Baker.

Joe Price, managing director at Modella Capital, said: "As a firm, we strongly believe that this much-loved brand deserves the chance to remain on the High Street in the UK and Ireland.

"The issues that Claire's is facing are significant, and we will need to work collaboratively with all interested parties if our proposed rescue plan is to succeed."

Claire's UK administration began on August 13, following its US business filing for bankruptcy on August 7.

After weeks of uncertainty, Modella Capital struck a deal with Claire's US parent company, Ames Watson, to take over 156 UK stores.

Employees have been told decisions will be made as quickly as possible, but the future of at-risk stores remains uncertain until talks are complete.
