All Creatures Great and Small concern as James Herriot 'hiding' something from wife Helen

Send Push

The wait is almost over as the fifth series of All Creatures Great and Small begins this September.

Following an emotional series finale in February, Channel 5 fans saw James Herriot (played by Nicholas Ralph) and his wife Helen (Rachel Shenton) welcome their first child together.

However, as the new episodes begin, fans will see James return to his post at RAF Abingdon and it looks as though there's drama on the way.

In a snippet of the first episode on Channel 5's official Twitter, fans can see a phone call between James and Helen.

His wife doesn't hide her shock that James is being made to dig ditches instead of his assigned job.

Mentioning that he's a vet, which means he could be used elsewhere in the field, she informed him he has a reserved occupation.

She said: "They're not going to let you fly?"

However, he highlights to Helen he's still an airman.

Missing him, she replies: "Yes, I know but you're supposed to be a pilot. If they're not going to let you do that anymore can't they just send you home?"

Although James revealed it's not as easy as she believes, telling her he has a duty to uphold.

He adds: "I owe it to these men, I can't just walk away, not now."

However, by the tone of his voice, it's clear Helen believes James is holding back information.

She asked: "James, is there something you're not telling me?"

In the clip, he seems troubled by her question as he decides to quickly end their phone call.

Telling his wife to kiss their newborn for him, they both end the phone call as James looks off into the distance, clearly hiding something from her.

A synopsis for the first episode reads: "James and his RAF crew are gearing up for an important training flight. James reassures a young crewmate, Banerjee, that it's natural to feel nervous.

"But as they're about to embark on their flight, James is unexpectedly grounded.

"James is assessed by the Medical Officer who delivers some unexpected and disheartening news. Helen, filled with worry, is puzzled by James' refusal to return home, as he doesn't want to disappoint his team."

Elsewhere, Mrs Hall (Anna Madeley) and Helen go to a community meeting regarding the local war effort.

Meanwhile, Siegfried Farnon (Samuel West) is feeling the pressure to keep the surgery going while both James and his brother Tristan Farnon (Callum Woodhouse) are away.

All Creatures Great and Small continues Thursday's on Channel 5 from 9pm.
