Chandigarh: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi’s husband, Robert Vadra, on Tuesday called for accepting "what people want" as Haryana favored the BJP for a third term in the state, leading Congress to stop its early celebrations.
In an Instagram story, Vadra wrote, "Accept what the people want and help the state develop, with the leaders they choose. Think large, think India." The Congress has so far won 13 seats and is leading in 21, while the BJP has a lead in 43 of the 90 Assembly constituencies in Haryana. As vote counting began this morning, Congress was seen taking a lead in the majority of seats, briefly seeming to cross the halfway mark of 46.
While the exit polls predicted a clean sweep for the Congress, the party's missteps, like banking heavily on Jat stalwart Bhupinder Singh Hooda and sidelining Dalit leader Kumari Selja, may have cost it the election. Congress workers were seen bursting crackers and distributing 'jalebis' and 'laddoos' at the party headquarters in Delhi earlier today when trends showed that it was racing ahead in Haryana. However, the celebrations stopped after trends started favoring the BJP, hinting at the party forming a government for the third consecutive time in the state.
The Congress also raised the issue of an "unexplained slowdown" in updating the results of the Haryana elections with the Election Commission. The Election Commission, however, rejected Congress's charge, calling the claims "irresponsible, unfounded, and uncorroborated malafide narratives."
