Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Arrives in the US After Successful Visit to Mexico

Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman landed in the United States on Sunday, receiving a warm welcome at Newark Liberty International Airport. She was greeted by India's Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, and Consul General Binaya Srikanta Pradhan upon her arrival from Mexico City.

Sitharaman had visited Mexico from October 17 to 20, engaging with key political and business leaders in both Guadalajara and Mexico City. During her visit, she encouraged Mexican investors to explore opportunities in India, particularly in areas like Global In-House Capability Centers (GICCs), aircraft and ship leasing, and foreign university setups at GIFT-IFSC. GIFT-IFSC is emerging as a global hub for reinsurance and sustainable finance.

The Finance Minister also attended the India-Mexico Trade and Investment Summit, a pivotal event aimed at strengthening bilateral trade and investment ties between the two nations. She called on private sector leaders from both countries to enhance collaboration, especially in sectors like pharmaceuticals, MedTech, and digital innovation.

Sitharaman highlighted India's growing strength in manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and the automotive sector, underscoring the potential for a robust multi-sectoral partnership between India and Mexico. She referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 2016 visit to Mexico, which elevated the relationship between the two countries to a Strategic Partnership.

During the summit, an important Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Mexican Business Coordinating Council (CCE), aimed at boosting business-to-business cooperation. This agreement is expected to increase Mexico’s sourcing of pharmaceuticals and medical devices from India.

The summit focused on expanding collaboration in key industries such as IT, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, and automotive. Over 250 business leaders and investors from diverse sectors participated in the event, which was organized by the Trade and Commerce Council of India in partnership with CII and the Indian Embassy in Mexico.
