Medical Negligence in UP: Doctors Leave Device in Woman's Stomach During Surgery, Family Awarded ₹12 Lakh Compensation

In a shocking case of medical negligence from Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, a pregnant woman lost her life after doctors allegedly left a surgical device inside her body during an operation. This tragic error has now resulted in a fine of ₹12 lakh being imposed on the responsible hospital by the District Consumer Forum.

The incident dates back to March 27, 2017, when a woman was admitted in critical condition to Qadri Hospital in Dildarnagar, which was managed by Dr. Manoj Singh and Dr. A.K. Tiwari. Following her delivery, the woman's condition deteriorated. She was referred to Shamme Hussaini Hospital near Hamid Setu, where the attending physician, Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, discovered that a blood drainage device had been accidentally left inside her stomach during the initial surgery. Despite emergency treatment to remove the device and control internal bleeding, the woman died just days later due to post-surgical complications.

The victim’s husband, Ram Ashish, filed complaints with the CMO and district officials, prompting an inquiry. The Chief Medical Officer's investigation confirmed medical negligence, and an FIR was lodged against Dr. Manoj Singh.

The matter was also taken to the District Consumer Forum, where the bench—chaired by Sujit Srivastava—found the hospital at fault. The post-mortem confirmed that the woman died due to an infection that developed after the surgery. On this basis, the forum ordered Qadri Hospital’s management to pay ₹12 lakh as compensation to the deceased’s family within two months.
