Woman dies after being hit by bus in 'tragic' accident at notorious Nottingham junction

A woman in her 30s has died after being hit by a bus at a notoriously dangerous junction in Nottingham city centre.

Emergency services were called to Lower Parliament Street at 6.05am today following reports of a collision involving a bus and a pedestrian.

The woman was treated at the scene but died a short time later, said while stating that the victim was aged in her 30s. A huge police cordon remains in place between Milton Street and Glasshouse Street while investigation work takes place and will remain closed for some time.

Drivers have been asked to avoid the area and forensic investigators have been seen on the street carrying out investigations along with police officers with a huge cordon in place.

Many people have taken to social media to offer their condolences and say how dangerous is the junction where the accident happened. "That stretch of road is a nightmare. vehicles, deliveroos all coming from different angles," said one person.

Another wrote: "How awful, that young woman would have got up this morning, got ready for her day and headed out the door and now her life has ended. Condolences to her family and friends." While on person suggested: "Barriers are needed to ensure people cross at the lights or pedestrian crossing."

There were many other people who also commented on the road layout. A user wrote: "For me, all the roads around the city centre should become pedestrianised!"

Chief Inspector Dean Gallacher said: “This was a tragic incident and we are currently working to understand exactly what happened. The road will remain closed for some time as investigation work is carried out and we advise drivers to avoid the area until further notice.” Additional witnesses are asked to call 101 quoting incident 72 of 22 October 2024.

Nottingham City Transport (NCT) said there are "severe delays" to its services due to the incident, resulting in several temporary stop changes.

A spokesperson for Nottingham Travelwise said: "Lower Parliament Street is CLOSED between Glasshouse Street and Milton Street. Emergency services are on scene dealing with an ongoing incident. Please avoid the area and look to use alternative routes where possible until further notice."
