Pep Guardiola backtracks on Man City comments after 'take a break' claim

Pep Guardiola says he is not looking to quit any time soon despite planning a break from football. The Spanish coach recently that he would be stepping away from the game once he leaves the Etihad Stadium.

And that could happen very soon with having just over two years remaining on his deal with the recently dethroned champions. That would see the 54-year-old repeat the year-long sabbatical that he enjoyed after leaving before taking the job.

And while Guardiola has doubled down on his suggestion that he would be having a break, he has clarified that it’s not on the agenda any time soon. Speaking to , he said: "I didn't say I was leaving now or at the end of the season.

"If they sack me, then yes! I said that when I finish my time here in I don't know one, two, three, four, five or years, I don't know, I will take a break, so I'm not retired, but I will take a break, for sure.

"Do you know what a two-year contract for a manager in football means? It's an eternity, so what I'm saying is that when I'm finished here I will take a break. I will need to make a stop, that's all."

Guardiola’s latest comments come after he had confirmed to ESPN Brasil that he was planning an extended break. He said: "I want people to remember me however they want.

"After my contract with City, I'm going to stop. I'm sure. I don't know if I'm going to retire, but I'm going to take a break. How I want to be remembered, I don't know.

"All coaches want to win so we can have a memorable job, but I believe that the fans of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and City had fun watching my teams play. I don't think we should ever live thinking about whether we're going to be remembered.

"When we die, our families cry for two or three days and then that's it -- you're forgotten. In the careers of coaches, there are good and bad ones, the important thing is that the good ones are remembered for longer.

"I'll tell you that the most important thing is not what people think of you, after all, our lives as footballers have been very good. There are new challenges as a coach, I don't know what will happen in the future and in the end that doesn't matter."
