Paul Scholes launches into furious rant at 'uncoached' Man Utd - 'Players looked dead!'

Paul Scholes has declared that Manchester United look 'uncoached' and that players 'looked dead' in a tirade against the team following defeat to Tottenham.

The Red Devils went behind after just three minutes when Micky van de Ven marched through United's defences before playing to Brennan Johnson to open the scoring. Spurs dominated proceedings as Bruno Fernandes was sent off on the verge of half-time, and Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke netted in the second period to seal victory.

Erik ten Hag's position has come under scrutiny in the aftermath with United sitting 12th in the Premier League after six matches. The Dutchman saw his contract extended in the summer despite his position at Old Trafford being far from certain at the end of last season.

The club decided to back Ten Hag however, but Scholes is seeing little merit in that decision thus far. The former United star launched a furious take down of what the team have displayed this season and the manager's lack of influence.

"Players looked dead today, they looked flat, they looked like they don't know what to do and there is no enthusiasm for the game of football," Scholes told Optus Sport.

"You don't know how they are going to play, how they're going to approach games, are they going to play on the counter-attack, try and sit deep, try and have all possession? We have no idea.

"Of course we should [know by know]. They look an uncoached football team.

"I think whatever happens, happens and he [Ten Hag] just takes it. It's not [acceptable] we are two-and-a-bit years in now and from the first week Postecoglou went in we probably knew what Tottenham were going to do and are doing it to this day.

"We're two-and-a-bit years down the road and it's an uncoached team and that can only come from the training pitch.

"They don't know what they want. Some of the positions that people take up on the pitch it's just madness at times. Stop hearing excuses, get on that training pitch and find a way of playing.

"Just give us something. He [Ten Hag] really praised Postecoglou for the way they play, why don't you try something like that?"

Ex-United captain Gary Neville was equally brutal. “It was an absolutely disgusting performance in that first half in effort, quality, everything you would want in a football team," he said on Sky Sports.

"There will be a lot of questions to answer for that group and the manager in the next week. I’ve been here at Man United enough over the past 10 to 12 years to know that a game and a result like this needs reversing rather quickly.

"The snowball starts to roll down that hill and it gathers apace. Erik ten Hag has got to stop it at source right now because this is a shocking day, a sobering day.

"I said just before the game that there can be no excuses. A mountain of cash has been spent and invested. The first half was absolutely woeful, as bad as it gets.

“The pressure is going to get ramped up this week – it is going to be brutal. It has been a bad day for Ten Hag, really bad. It’s one of the worst performances I have seen under Ten Hag – and that is saying something. It is really bad."
