Jamie Carragher wasted no time in rubbing salt into Gary Neville's wounds following Manchester United's Carabao Cup exit - reposting a recent clip where the Sky Sports pundit said his former side would "surprise a few".
He said that positively following the first weekend of the Premier League, but just over a week later and the Red Devils were dumped out of the Carabao Cup at the hands of Grimsby. The League Two outfit advanced to the third round on penalties having led 2-0 at half-time. United rescued themselves from embarrassment in normal time, but couldn't hold their nerve from 12 yards as The Mariners enjoyed a famous victory with those from Manchester having to deal with an extremely low moment.
Neville has done his customary predictions for the seasonand put the Red Devils in the top four, despite them finishing 15th last season. He claimed that their performance in their loss to Arsenal had given him hope that they were in fact heading in the right direction.
Since then they've been held by Fulham and have now lost in the second round of the Carabao Cup to a team in League Two, leading Carragher to poke fun at his Sky Sports colleague.

He reposted a clip on social media that saw Neville defend his top four prediction as he said: "When I watched United yesterday I thought the performance was very good. I think they'll get a goalkeeper, I'm banking on it. When they bring a goalkeeper in and you've got those players up front with that backline, I think with the free weeks they've got and no Europa League, I think United will surprise a few."
Neville referenced how he's included United in his top four predictions every time he's ever been asked on Sky Sports. Despite their poor year last time out he has them above the likes of Chelsea, Newcastle and Aston Villa.
United though have not replicated the levels they showed during the loss at Old Trafford on the opening weekend and Ruben Amorim admitted that the positive signs he saw during the loss to Arsenal have not continued as they were left to dissect a hugely damaging night.
The head coach said: "When everything is so important in our club and you try to do everything. You have come from pre-season, even Arsenal you lose the game but you are there, you are improving and you see the performance, but then reach this kind of game, when everything is so important in our club. And when you start a game like this… I think my players are talking really loud about what they want, so I’m really sorry to our fans, I have nothing to say anymore.”
