Uttar Pradesh Plants Over 2.14 Crore Saplings Along 82 Rivers To Revive Ecosystems, Boost Irrigation

Uttar Pradesh has marked a significant milestone in its ecological restoration efforts, with over 2.14 crore saplings planted along the banks of 82 rivers across the state. The initiative aims to revive dying rivers, improve groundwater levels, and enhance green cover through mass plantation drives.

Jalaun district led the campaign, planting more than 31 lakh saplings along riverbanks. Jhansi followed with 24 lakh, and Hamirpur ranked third with over 16 lakh saplings. The drive is part of a broader plan to rejuvenate rivers, improve irrigation potential, and combat environmental degradation in rural areas.

The effort is a collaborative undertaking by the State Mission for Clean Ganga, Namami Gange, the Rural Water Supply Department, the Forest Department, and District Ganga Committees. In addition to plantations, pond desilting is being carried out under MGNREGA to support better water retention and ecological balance. T

his state-wide campaign reflects a strong focus on restoring neglected and encroached riverbeds to their natural state. Plantation drives are being conducted along major rivers such as the Ganga, Yamuna, Gomti, Saryu, Tamsa, Mandakini, Rapti, Betwa, and Ghaghra, as well as smaller rivers including Ishan, Noon, and Peeli Nadi. At least one river is being taken up for rejuvenation in every district.

The benefits of the project extend beyond environmental gains. Improved water availability is helping farmers access better irrigation, which in turn boosts crop yields and supports rural livelihoods.
