Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Indore has added yet another feather to its cap by setting a new record in electricity bill payments. In a display of civic responsibility, 91% of the city’s electricity consumers—amounting to over 7.10 lakh people—deposited their bills in the month of March, contributing nearly Rs 200 crore to the state's revenue.
According to officials, this is the highest number of bill payments recorded in a single month in the city's history. Compared to March 2024, the number of consumers paying their bills in March 2025 increased by 1.05 lakh.
The achievement comes on the back of a well-coordinated revenue collection drive initiated by Madhya Pradesh West Zone Electricity Distribution Company. Nearly 600 employees and 50 engineers of West Discom worked relentlessly throughout the month for bill collection. Their efforts paid off with significant collections through regular channels and even Lok Adalat settlements, which remained open for payments until March 31.
"For the first time, bill payments in the city crossed the 7 lakh mark," said Vinay Pratap Singh, executive engineer of the North City Division. He noted that the division achieved a remarkable 92.69% bill payment rate, thanks to daily reviews and proactive engagement with defaulters. Flexible payment options were also provided to those facing financial difficulties.
In the Central City Division’s Rau Zone, Rs 1.25 crore more was collected compared to last year. Tarun Chawla, the zone in-charge, highlighted a 10% increase in the number of paying consumers from the previous March. Similarly, Kalani Nagar zone in-charge Ram Deshmukh reported that 18,400 out of 19,800 consumers paid their dues.
A month-long “Maha Abhiyan” (Mega Campaign) was run across all 30 zones of the city to boost revenue collection, and it achieved 100% success, officials said.
Rising demand and consumption
Indore, which houses around 7.75 lakh electricity consumers, currently faces a power demand of about 500 MW. Officials predict this could rise to 600 MW by the end of April and further touch 750 MW during May’s peak summer heat. Last year, the city witnessed a single-day consumption of 1.5 crore units, a figure expected to be surpassed this year.
