Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh): Frustrated by husband's torture, a 30-year-old woman consumed poison at Jabalpur's Superintendent of Police (SP) office during the weekly public hearing session on Tuesday.
Police officers at the spot rushed her to a government hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment.
The woman, identified as Draupadi Vishwakarma from Panna Mohalla, Suhagi, came to the SP office with a complaint against her husband, but due to frustration with police inaction, she tried to end her life.
Draupadi said she has been married for 12 years and has two young children. Her husband, Ramesh Vishwakarma, regularly drank alcohol, abused her physically and verbally, and did not take care of the children.
Since January, he had stopped giving any money for household expenses and even threatened to marry another woman. He also denied that Draupadi was his wife or that the children were his.
Her in-laws had thrown her out of the house and refused to help her.
Feeling mentally and physically tortured, Draupadi consumed poison that she had brought with her in a pouch. She drank it inside the SP office premises during the public hearing.
As soon as she collapsed, police officers at the spot rushed her to a government hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment. Doctors have said her condition is stable and she is out of danger.
Naib Tehsildar Neelu Bagri from Ranjhi said that the police received information from Adhartal Police Station about the incident and she visited Victoria Hospital to record the woman’s statement.
Despite Draupadi's repeated efforts to seek help, no action was taken until she took such a serious step.
The Adhartal police have now started investigating the case and promised to take legal action against the husband and others involved, based on the woman's statement.
