Religious Significance of Hartalika Teej Vrat
Hartalika Teej Vrat is observed on the Tritiya Tithi of Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha. This fast is especially observed by Saubhagyavati (Suhagin) women, but unmarried girls also observe it to get a good groom. The main purpose of this fast is that married women fast for the long life, good health, and marital happiness of their husbands. Unmarried girls observe this fast to get a suitable life partner. On this day, women observe a Nirjala fast (without food and water) and worship Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati by staying awake all night.
Mythological story of Hartalika Teej
In ancient times, Parvati, daughter of King Himalaya, wanted to have Lord Shiva as her husband since childhood. She performed severe penance to get Shiva as her husband. Meanwhile, Narad Muni advised King Himalaya to marry his daughter to Lord Vishnu. The king accepted this proposal. When Parvati came to know about this, she opposed it. One of her friends took her to the forest and hid her so that she would not get married. That is why this fast was named Hartalika. Mother Parvati performed severe penance in the forest. Lord Shiva was pleased with her penance and accepted her as his wife. Therefore, on this day, women fast with the desire of unbreakable love and dedication like Shiva-Parvati.
