Thomas Kraut , a 59-year-old Norwegian man, was wrongly diagnosed with obesity for 12 years due to a growing belly, which was actually caused by a 60-pound malignant tumor .
Kraut, who is originally from Germany, moved to Norway in 2008, and started experiencing health issues in 2011, with his growing stomach. In 2012, he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and obesity. The man was put on weight loss treatments and Ozempic for diabetes, as the doctors misdiagnosed him as overweight, while the cancer grew undetected. The tumour kept growing inside him
Talking to the New York Post, the man said that his stomach grew bigger and bigger. After consulting multiple doctors, in 2019, he decided to get approval for a gastric sleeve . That's when the doctor realized the hard surface on Thomas' stomach was not fat. The doctor ordered a CT scan, and found tumour. The tumor weighed 60.18 pounds and had a diameter of 20.59 inches.
Kraut recalled that the tumour was pressing on his stomach, and it was hard. Along with this, he had lost a lot of weight, because of the change in the diet and the Ozempic treatment. His face and arms were very thin, and his stomach was huge. The doctor told him that he was actually 'malnourished'. Kruat stated that it was a 'real shock' for him. His right kidney too was affected. It took the doctors two weeks to diagnose that Kraut had a rare fatty tumor with multiple smaller cancerous areas.
Kraut underwent a 10-hour surgery to remove the tumor, but the tumor had caused significant damage, including the removal of part of his small intestine and right kidney.
Kraut still has cancerous tissue inside him. He visits the oncologist twice a year, as a tumour tissue inside him is growing. The after-effects are beyond physical, as he also attends therapy sessions every two weeks.
Kraut and his wife have filed a lawsuit against the doctors who failed to diagnose the tumor. The doctors initially dismissed the case due to the rarity of the tumor, but Kraut's lawyer has filed an objection against the dismissal.
