Ind vs NZ Test: Sarfaraz Khan scores counter-attacking half century as India stare at innings defeat

India batter Sarfaraz Khan on Friday scored a counter-attacking half century against New Zealand in the second innings of the first Test at Bengaluru.

The Mumbai batter reached the milestone of just 42 balls, and put up a quickfire 100-run stand alongside senior batter Virat Kohli. Khan took on the bowling with a flurry of boundaries, while Kohli, too, reached his half century in a much measured manner. The two joined hands when captain Rohit Sharma departed for a well made 63-ball 56 and the team was staring at an innings defeat after being reduced to 95/2.

Earlier, New Zealand ended their first innings at 402, taking a massive 356-run lead. Rachin Ravindra scored 134 runs off just 157 balls, including 13 fours and four sixes. Tim Southee, too, chipped in with useful runs down the order with a 73-ball 65, which had five fours and four sixes. The duo added 137 runs in just 22 overs for the eighth wicket after India tried to fightback earlier in the day.

Spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja picked up three wickets each for India, while Mohammed Siraj grabbed two.

India were skittled out for shocking 46 runs in the first innings on Thursday. Opting to bat first on a tricky wicket, Indian batters struggled against the pace, bounce and seam of the Kiwi bowlers. As many as five batters recorded a duck. It is India's third lowest score overall and the worst performance at home.

Pacers Matt Henry ran through the batting and finished with 5/15, while William O'Rourke picked four wickets in his first outing in India. Southee had given the opening breakthrough by taking out captain Rohit Sharma.
