A 27-year-old from Murshidabad’s Shambhunagar, Domkal municipality, has become an unexpected viral sensation for his one-of-a-kind creation — a mobile bed on wheels. Unfortunately, his viral fame was cut short when Domkal police seized the vehicle for violating the Motor Vehicles Act, reported TOI.
Nawab Sheikh, a pool car driver by day, designed a fully functional bed cart that could be driven just like any other vehicle.
According to TOI, the quirky contraption featured a 5x7 ft mattress, pillows, bed sheets, and even a driver’s seat tucked near the pillow area, complete with a steering wheel, rear-view mirrors, and a brake system.
The sight of the ‘bed cart’ cruising between Raninagar and Domkal quickly attracted a crowd, often causing traffic jams. Videos of the vehicle went viral, with over 2.4 crore views on Nawab’s Facebook page and another 20 crore views on a Bangladeshi media channel.
Nawab shared that the project took him more than 1.5 years to complete, said the report.
“I had just one dream — to go viral,” he told TOI. “I spent around Rs 2.15 lakh on the project, purchasing parts like an engine, steering, fuel tank, and the body of a small car from a local workshop. I also hired a carpenter to build the wooden bed structure."
Despite earning only Rs 9,000 a month, Nawab managed to fund the project by selling his wife’s jewellery.
TOI reported that he finished the bed cart just in time for Eid and showcased it on the festival day, ignoring police advice to avoid the busy state highway due to potential crowding issues.
However, his moment of glory quickly soured when a Bangladeshi media channel uploaded the video just hours after Nawab shared it, leading to copyright complaints and the suspension of his Facebook account.
We were all proud of him. He worked so hard. But after the copyright complaints and video theft, he was heartbroken. I just want the government to help him now,” Meher Negar, his wife, told TOI.
Ilias Kanchan, Nawab’s cousin and former Domkal municipality councillor, praised his creativity.
“He’s always been an innovator. If supported properly, Nawab’s work could bring recognition not just to Murshidabad, but to the whole country,” he told TOI.
Police mentioned that Nawab didn’t have the necessary documents or permission to operate the modified vehicle on public roads. As a result, the bed cart has been impounded, and further action will be taken after the investigation.
