Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has broken his silence on the run-out mix-up with Indian captain Shubman Gill during the second Test against West Indies on October 11 at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. Jaiswal had begun Day 2 on 173, and fans were hoping he would convert it into a double century, but that milestone proved elusive.
The left-handed batter added only two runs to his overnight score before being run out in the second over of the day. Jaiswal drove a delivery from Jayden Seales to mid-off and attempted a quick single. Gill, at the non-striker’s end, denied the run, sensing a possible risk. Jaiswal realised it too late and could not return to the crease in time. West Indies wicketkeeper Tevin Imlach received the throw from Tagenarine Chanderpaul and dislodged the bails, completing the dismissal.
"Yeah, it's part of the game. It's fine," Jaiswal said to JioStar at the end of second day's play.
Meanwhile, Gill became the fifth player in history to register the most centuries in the World Test Championship (WTC) as he struck an unbeaten century on Day 2. Gill’s innings of 129* runs off 196 balls featured 16 boundaries and two sixes.
With this knock, the right-handed batter now has 2826 runs in 39 WTC matches at an average of 43.47 and a strike rate of 61.36, including 10 centuries. His highest score in the competition remains 269, scored against England earlier this year during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025.
Gill’s ton also allowed him to surpass former India skipper Rohit Sharma, who had nine centuries, making him the Indian player with the most WTC hundreds. The unbeaten century on Day 2 marks the fifth century by an Indian captain in a single calendar year, making Gill the second captain to achieve this feat after Virat Kohli in 2017 and 2018.
India declared their innings at 518/5 in 134.2 overs, courtesy of centuries from Gill and Jaiswal. West Indies finished on 140/4 on Day 2 stumps, trailing by 378 runs.
