The UK's most walkable city with an impressive castle and no end of cobbled streets

As autumn closes in, few places are better to experience the best of the season than Scotland.

Famed for its cobbled streets, castle, cosy bookshops and history, the city of Edinburgh has the added benefit of being voted one of the most walkable in the world.

Insider Monkey, an investing website, has curated a list of the most walkable cities in 2024, and the Scottish capital of Edinburgh came in sixth place globally.

Its top attractions, such as Edinburgh Castle and the National Museum of Scotland, are within close proximity, meaning visitors can wander from one to the other without exhausting themselves.

As well as the rich history and culture of Edinburgh, there are plenty of stunning hikes to do - including one recently made famous by the Netflix series One Day.

Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh recently took 15th place in a rundown by Time Out of 'Natural Wonders and Attractions in the UK Right Now'.

The hill is the highest of those that make up Holyrood Park and is actually an ancient volcano that geologists reckon erupted around 340 million years ago. Now, it attracts thousands of visitors who take on the trek for its incredible views over the city.

If you’d rather stay at sea level, don’t worry - Edinburgh has plenty to offer the more sedentary visitor. A trip to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art is a perfect way to spend a rainy autumn day.

The museum is home to Matisse, Picasso and Emin, as well as Scottish contemporaries and its landscaped grounds feature sculptures by Tony Cragg and Barbara Hepworth, amongst others.
