An insider told : "Strictly wanted to draw a line under one of the most troubling periods in the programme’s history, which had viewers deeply suspicious about what went on behind the scenes of the show."

They added such allegations had taken some shine off the contest and they were keen to draw a line under the most recent incident. On Monday the duo appeared on Strictly's sister show on BBC Two, It Takes Two. Katya insisted the and slammed people for portraying Wynne as "someone he's not". She said she couldn't bear to watch the onslaught following the controversy.

Speaking to the host, Katya said: "I have to make absolutely clear, that this whole incident with the hand and the high five on Saturday night, it was an inside joke between Wynne and I. Was it a silly joke? Yes. Was it a bad joke? Yes.

"However, it was a joke and even the idea that it made me feel uncomfortable or offended in any way is totally nonsense. Those that have doubts, you guys have got it wrong. So hopefully this will be the end of it."

Wynne also admitted he understood why his actions may have been misunderstood.

Fans had previously note as "inappropriate". As she tried to explain the "joke" to her fans on social media, many didn't buy into it and hit out at her actions. One user on /X said: "This is very irresponsible of you Katya. You are sending a message out to women saying, this creepy behaviour from a man is ok and acceptable and shouldn’t feel uncomfortable. It’s very clear what’s going on here."

Another agreed, adding: "IF it was a joke, it’s unbelievably crass considering what’s been going on at SCD. It trivialises a really important subject. Read the room, as we used to say."
