Netflix Monsters star holds back tears after Menendez brothers case update

One of the stars of Netflix series Monsters held back tears after being asked for their reaction to the latest update surrounding the Menendez brothers' case.

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon confirmed earlier this month that his office was examining new evidence that had been submitted regarding the fate of Erik and Lyle Menendez.

Gascon held a news conference this week where he recommended a resentencing of the brothers, which could eventually see them freed after more than 30 years in prison.

Ari Graynor, who played the role of Leslie Abramson, the defence attorney for Erik Menendez, in the series, said she was 'overwhelmed' and tried not to cry when she was asked for her reaction to the news.

Speaking to cameras at a recent event, she said: "You're going to make me start crying, it just happened too recently that I still feel completely overwhelmed and moved.

"They deserve to be out of there and Leslie Abramson, the most iconic lawyer of all time that I had this incredible privilege of playing - this is what she was trying so hard to get the jury to understand 35 years ago.

"It is moving, it is powerful, it is time and I just pray that like Leslie says at the end of her actual closing (argument) was to see Erik walking down the street free from all of this."

The siblings, who shot and killed their parents Jose and Kitty Menendez in their Beverly Hills home in 1989, claimed they did so in self defence amid allegations of abuse at the hands of their father.

This new evidence handed to the district attorney's office include a handwritten letter from Erik, written in 1988 to his cousin where in he appears to be describing the abuse and a sworn affidavit from Roy Rossello who alleges he was also assaulted by Jose Menendez.

At the conference on Thursday (October 24), Gascon recommended that the pair have their sentence replaced from life to 50 years to life.

This means that if approved by a judge, they would immediately be eligible for parole.

Gascon said: "Under the law, resentencing is appropriate. I'm going to recommend that to a court tomorrow. I believe they have paid their debt to society."

Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story and The Menendez Brothers documentary are both available to stream on Netflix now.
