Kevin McCloud moved to tears on Grand Designs as guest reveals cancer battle

Grand Designs host Kevin McCloud was visibly moved to tears by a couple's heart-wrenching journey amidst a cancer scare.

In a touching episode on , Kevin joined Tony and Ara, who embarked on a brave venture to raze Tony's ancestral home, setting out to erect a sanctuary for wellness in the tranquillity of a Henley-on-Thames woodland glade.

Ara, who once worked in the corporate , now battles an autoimmune illness and needed a peaceful place to heal.

Undeterred by the task ahead, the pair plunged into action, embarking on the demolition with the dream of their new home already taking shape, as work commenced in earnest back in 2019.

Tasked with guiding the construction, Tony took the reins of project management and, keen to economise, boldly ventured to 'learn on the job' amid the turmoil of the build.

With all the building chaos going on, it was one moment that left Kevin emotional as Ara revealed later in the episode she had been diagnosed with cancer, reports .

Despite the couple's setbacks, they managed to complete the home after four years, with host Kevin moved to tears over their milestone.

Upon arrival for his visit, an emotional Kevin conveyed: "I'm approaching Tony and Ara's house with a little trepidation. On top of the emotional, psychological, physical load this project has brought comes this latest news of Ara's cancer, which is so sad."

Ara opened up, saying: "Nobody could have predicted what was going to happen to me. Now the path is to do peace, contentment and gratitude. I have so much to be grateful for, I live in a little piece of heaven. It's heaven round here."

Moved by the conversation, Kevin responded emotionally: "It's my turn to get a bit tearful now, I'm in awe of the pair of you. Very tough and very wonderful of you to have got this far, I think it's just a great thing."
