Jadon Sancho Chelsea transfer clause explained in Man United return chance after star shines again

Ironically, Jadon Sancho's last assist for Manchester United came against Chelsea. At the peak nadir of Frank Lampard's second spell in charge, and with Mauricio Pochettino all-but-confirmed as being the permanent replacement, a Joao Felix goal was all the Blues had to show for on a dismal night at Old Trafford.

Sancho played the full game as Chelsea were torn apart. In the penultimate Premier League match of the season, it was a goodbye from Felix and, as it happened, almost a farewell for Sancho too.

The 23-year-old would only play four more times in the league for United before a mid-season loan to Borussia Dortmund and then the surprise deadline day switch to Stamford Bridge. It meant that he went over 12 months without assisting a goal before his Chelsea debut last weekend against Bournemouth.

The immediate impact there, laying up for Christopher Nkunku to score the match-winning goal, endeared him to his new fans. When he marked his first start for the club with another assist - this time inside five minutes for Nicolas Jackson at West Ham - it opened up the possibility that Chelsea might just have masterminded a seriously good deal here.

Sancho was a player sought after by all of Europe in 2021 when he moved to Manchester United for £72million. If Chelsea finish at least 14th this season then they will trigger an obligation to buy him for around a third of that, according to reports.

football.london understands that the final fee will be between £20-25million depending on how high Enzo Maresca's men reach in the table. It is said that, similar to Newcastle's deal to sign Lewis Hall this summer, they must first end the season above mid-table.

That isn't expected to be a problem, even if the past two years have seen them in 12th and sixth. It will leave Chelsea with a hugely talented attacker for a cut-price fee.

As United start the season slowly once more - they were held by Crystal Palace 0-0 just hours after Chelsea's win at the London Stadium - Sancho's form so far for Maresca is something to shout about. Already he looks more comfortable and expressive than when playing in red, and that has been clear in spades.

Sancho also showed a sharp piece of skill in the first half to jinx around two defenders, opening up space for a shot before faking once more and passing to a free teammate instead. It continues on from his bright cameo at Bournemouth, which helped Chelsea to get a foothold in a match they had been struggling to get to grips with.

After gone almost 18 months without an assist at United, Sancho ended up with two for Chelsea within 50 minutes. It was 13 games for his last two under Erik ten Hag, and he is already on for a most productive Premier League season to date.

With just three assists in each of his two full campaigns, the England international is showing more than enough to get Chelsea fans excited about what is to come.
