How Feyenoord has fared since Arne Slot's Liverpool departure

Send Push

Arne Slot's Liverpool career could not have gotten off to a better start following nine wins from his first 10 games in charge as head coach.

In that time, the Dutchman has taken his new side to the top of the with six wins from seven games, progressed to the last 16 of the and helped the Reds to become one of just seven sides in the 36-team league phase of the to win their first two games.

While new club has thrived since his summer move, his former club has not. Despite leaving Feyenoord in a good place with a second-place finish in the Eredivisie and a KNVB Cup victory, the Dutch outfit has struggled to adapt to life without the 46-year-old.

Slot etched himself into Feyenoord folklore with three highly successful seasons at the Rotterdam-based club, leading them to the league title in 2023, last season's domestic cup and being named Eredivisie Manager of the Year on two occasions.

Feyenoord lost just two games under his stewardship in the Eredivisie last season, racking up 84 points, yet still couldn't win the title. If it was planning on having another go this season, then it's already way off the mark.

Now led by former Denmark defender and Sparta Prague manager Brian Priske, Feyenoord already finds itself 11 points behind reigning champions and league leaders PSV Eindhoven after just seven games of the 2024-25 Eredivisie campaign.

Despite remaining as one of three sides yet to be beaten this season, last year's runners-up have struggled to rediscover its ruthless side, winning just three of its games and drawing the other four.

Just one clean sheet has been kept during that run, too, while there was a humiliating 4-0 battering at home to Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen in the opening round of Champions League fixtures last month - with all four goals coming before half-time.

Since then, Feyenoord has managed to pick itself up, securing a 3-2 victory away to Girona to grab its first points of the Champions League campaign before earning a morale-boosting 2-1 victory over high-flyers Twente in the Eredivisie just a few days later.

Losing captain and star defender Lutsharel Geertruida to RB Leipzig on transfer deadline day was a major blow, while coping without midfielder Mats Wieffer and loanee Yankuba Minteh, who contributed 27 goal involvements between them last season and have both joined , hasn't been easy.

Keeping hold of star midfielder Quinten Timber and last season's 26-goal striker Santiago Gimenez has been a huge plus, however, and alongside the likes of Brazilian forward Igor Paixão and Japanese striker Ayase Ueda, will be crucial in preventing any further drop off this season.

As for the manager, Priske is no Slot, but he has some credit in the bank having won back-to-back Czech First League titles with Sparta Prague, including a league and cup double last season that saw him crowned Manager of the Year.

He also led Feyenoord to the annual Johan Cruyff Shield (Dutch Super Cup) against Eredivisie champions PSV back in August, but only time will tell whether the Netherlands outfit can really replace the impact of Slot and avoid a major backwards step now that he has gone.
