A champion racehorse has made a ‘miraculous’ recovery after collapsing in the middle of a big race and feared to have died.

Think About It is one of the ’s best sprinters who has earned more than £6million in a career which included victory in last year’s Everest, the world’s richest turf race.

On this year’s Everest card at Randwick in Sydney on Saturday, he was contesting the 18-runner Group 3 Sydney Stakes when he suddenly fell back through the field and collapsed to the turf.

He flipped over spectacularly, his legs flailed in the air and jockey Jason Collett rushed to Think About It’s aid as he was seen slumped on the track in a horrific scene which led those watching to assume his injury would prove fatal.

Among postings from fans on X were comments like “What a gut punch with Think About It. A super horse. Sure I'm not the only one feeling completely winded seeing that.”

“Awful to watch” and “That’s devastating, Think About It."

The screens were erected round six-year-old for privacy while vets attended to the horse, but eventually Think About It rose to his feet and was led back to the stables to the relief of the 50,000 crowd and TV viewers.

Owners Proven Thoroughbreds later posted: “Watching Think About It staggering to a collapse during the running of the Sydney Stakes was gut wrenching to say the least. Seeing the covers come up is something no horse lover should endure.

“Miraculously though, after a significant pulmonary haemorrhage, our great horse bravely stood to his feet and soon after was walking back to his stall, once again showing how tough he is.

“Providing any potential infection doesn’t materialise, it now appears likely that he will survive.

“It goes without saying that he owes us nothing and his welfare is priority right now. Thank you to all the vets for their swift action and thank you for all the messages of support.”

Sky commentator Ron Dufficy said: “Today I thought we lost an Everest Champion like most people who watched.

“But like a Champion fighter he rose from the canvas after a severe knock out , brushed himself off and stood there in his stall sound as a bell saying I’m ready to go home now.”

The stewards report said: “The veterinary officer reported that Think About It, which suffered an attack of bleeding, made a quick recovery under veterinary supervision.”
