Abbott Elementary set for epic crossover with It's Always Sunny - despite much darker tone

Fans of Philly-based comedies Abbott Elementary and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia will be thrilled to hear that a crossover episode is coming.

It has been reported that the crossover will air as part of Abbott’s fourth season, which will be released to US audiences later this month.

It is believed that the two incredibly popular comedy series will be crossing paths, though it’s not yet clear how this will work, given that they both have very different tones.

Abbott Elementary is bright, warm, and heartfelt, with a confessional camera style that is reminiscent of past NBC shows like Parks and Recreation.

Meanwhile, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia features pitch-black comedy, with some seriously sinister undertones.

However, it seems both shows have found a way to work together, as It’s Always Sunny creator Rob McElhenney appeared to confirm the news in a new post.

The actor, who is also famous for starring in Welcome to Wrexham alongside , appeared beside his co-star Charlie Day and Abbott creator Quinta Brunson as they posed in what appeared to be the Warner Bros. lot.

Leaving fans to speculate over the picture, he simply captioned it: “Oh. Hello.”

He also shared a story with his 1.8 million Instagram followers, which included another photo with fellow Sunny star Danny DeVito along with Abbott stars Tyler James Williams and William Stanford Davis.

It comes after months of speculation that the show creators could be planning to collaborate, as during Comic-Con back in July, Brunson teased that Abbott would be featuring a crossover episode during season 4.

It would make sense that this crossover would be with It’s Always Sunny, as it’s a similarly successful comedy show that takes place in Philadelphia.

Both shows also belong to Disney, as in the US Abbott airs on ABC and Sunny runs on FX.

She said at the time: “We will be doing an interesting crossover this season … but I’m not going to tell you with who or with what or where or when or how.

“But it’s really exciting, and I think it’ll change television as we know it.”

Abbott Elementary season 4 premieres Wednesday, October 9 at 9:30 pm on ABC. The show is available to stream in the UK via Disney Plus.
